Police Warn Of Telephone Scams Targeting The Elderly

Logan City Police say scammers are targeting Utahns through a couple of telephone scams, and are warning people to be cautious if they receive a threatening phone call.

Logan City Assistant Police Chief Jeff Curtis says there are two types of calls these scammers are making.

The first call they are aware of is a person who says they are calling about a debt that is past due. They say the debt needs to be immediately paid in full, and police say the caller gets threatening.

A second type of phone call is from someone who says they are a family member, and have been arrested overseas. They request money through a wire transfer, and are also targeting the elderly.

According to a media release from Logan City Police, collection agencies and police departments don't use these methods, and if you receive a similar call or email, you should report it to your local police department.

Gov. Herbert Declares Jan. 31 As Jerry Sloan Day To Honor Legendary Jazz Coach

Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert has officially declared January 31, 2014 as “Jerry Sloan Day,” as the State of Utah joins the Utah Jazz organization in honoring the legendary former head coach with a retired jersey banner at EnergySolutions Arena on Friday.

An excerpt from the declaration states that the State of Utah joins in “recognizing the enduring legacy of one of the greatest and most respected coaches in the history of the National Basketball Association.” It also recognizes Sloan for his “invaluable contributions to elevating and advancing the visibility and status of professional sports, particularly basketball, not only in our state but throughout the nation.”

Gov. Herbert’s declaration also highlights many of Sloan’s accomplishments, such as finishing his coaching career with the third most wins in NBA history en route to two NBA Finals appearances, seven division championships, 13 seasons with more than 50 wins, 16 consecutive winning seasons, and 19 playoff appearances.

Sloan will become the 11th individual in Jazz history to have a banner raised in his honor during a special halftime ceremony at the Jazz game on Jan. 31. A jersey with numerals 1223 will be unveiled, commemorating his total number of regular season and playoff victories during his 23 seasons as the Jazz coach.

Jazz tickets for the Sloan retirement celebration on Jan. 31 at halftime of the game against the Golden State Warriors are available now through utahjazz.com, the EnergySolutions Arena box office and by calling (801) 355-SEAT. A Jerry Sloan Banner Pack is available to buy tickets for two upcoming games and get one free for games against Golden State on Jan. 31, Minnesota Timberwolves on Feb. 22 and Dallas Mavericks on March 12.
